NEW YEAR, NEW TRADITIONS

We always love New Year’s Day because of the feelings it evokes in us – feelings of newness, of endless possibilities, of clean slates and fresh ideas. As we look forward to the dawn of 2021, let’s pause and reflect on 2020. 2020 was a rough year for many of us, in large part because of a global pandemic that few of us saw coming. And unfortunately, if you’ve been watching the news, you know 2021 isn’t about to bring a magical end to this pandemic. So what does this mean? It means forewarned is forearmed. It means even though there’s still a pandemic on, you can plan to accomplish big goals and keep living your life in 2021 – and this time, you won’t be taken by surprise!

With that in mind, let’s talk about three small ways you can change your life for the better in 2021.

  1. Organize accordingly. Let’s face it. Hand sanitizers and masks aren’t going away – so you might as well find a place in your house for them to live, if you haven’t already. I personally got tired of always having them tossed on the kitchen table or stuffing them in a pocket, so I arranged a system. Clean cloth masks are hung by their strings on our hall tree; dirty cloth masks go in a mesh laundry bag on top of the washer. I also make sure there are always backup masks in the car in case we forget to take our clean ones with us. BONUS TIP: Mesh laundry bags are the perfect container for washing cloth masks in the washing machine because the strings won’t get pulled out or tangled. You’re welcome!
  2. If you’re like us, you’ve probably been eating out less, spending less money on crowd entertainment experiences (bye, movie theaters), and finding new ways to economize (thanks, COVID). If so, you may have noticed your savings account growing. Start thinking of ways to label that money wisely. If you still need to have an emergency fund, keep saving! If you know you’ll need a new car, think of it as your car fund. Got a house repair you’ve been putting off? Now may be the time to bite the bullet and call the repair guy.
  3. Stay connected. You may be seeing friends and family less, and unfortunately, you might have fallen into a hole of not-seeing friends equals not-talking-to-friends because let’s face it, we’ve all been feeling a little down this year. Time to change things! Start making Zoom dates. Start making phone calls. Write letters to each other. Use texts and Voxer calls to catch up with friends.
