TIP #1: Start Small.

Don’t try to redecorate your entire home in one day. Your wallet (and your sanity) will thank you!

Instead, pick one area of your home to focus on. Maybe it’s the upstairs guest half-bath. Maybe it’s the foyer. Choose a small room, then start thinking about the basics. What’s the purpose of the room? What really belongs there –and what doesn’t? Be brutally honest with yourself about what knick-knacks, pieces of furniture, and other items really work in the room and which don’t. Make two boxes: one for keeps, one for discards. By winnowing things down to the basics, you’ll either get a good start on minimalist decorating or you’ll create a blank slate to start over.

TIP #2: Think in Threes.

When arranging collections or groups of items, pick three items to showcase on a surface. According to freshome.com, “odd-numbered groupings create more visual interest than even-numbered groupings. In particular, three seems to be the ideal number.” If you’ve ever tried to make four or six items “look good,” you probably struggled with symmetry or a feeling of clutter. But take away all but three items, and suddenly it’s a little easier on the eye, a little easier to organize, a little simpler to look at. TIP #3: Avoid Trends.

Trends may be fun to follow in fashion (and to make fun of later at parties – hello, 80s!), but stick to style when it comes to decorating your home. Specifically, your style. It’s your house, after all, so it should look like you – and fit your sense of style, your budget, and your life.
